Illustrations of Ani, the capitol city of medieval Armenian kingdom of the Bagratuni dynasty (961 C.E.) Also known as “the city of 1001 churches” and “the city of 40 gates”. With over 100.000 inhabitants Ani was at its time the rival to Constantinople and Cairo.
