According to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah Emirate the city of Ras al-Khaimah was historically known as Julfar and was founded by Armenians who escaped Persia during the Mongol invasion. During a televised broadcast His Highness revealed that: “The Armenian Christians fled from Persia to that place called Bgelovar which is now located in Ras Al Khaimah, and was founded by Armenians” He then added that Julfar was an Armenian and not an Arab name. The ruler also asked the educational authorities to change the textbooks accordingly.

The statement was published on his personal website (in Arabic) : www.sheikhdrsultan.ae

  1. His Highness Sheikh Dr is a fantastic title! I think I’ll be Her Majesty Queen Master 😉 And I’m going to share this with my Armenian bf, see if he knew about Julfar. Thanks!

      1. You deserve the title – You have my approval & blessings! I guess we should begin to call you by Queen Majesty:) Always pleasure to hear from you:)

  2. Americans know so little of the history of the Middle East. I respect His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi for having the textbooks corrected to show the Armenian Christian founding of Julfar. Thank you for sharing this history lesson.

      1. Yes. Americans do not understand the ancient history of Christianity, nor what it is like for Orthodox and Coptic Christians now living in fundamentalist Islamic countries. Not all Muslims are fundamentalist or anti-Christian, though.

Many Greeks, too, were killed by the Turks. It is tragic that the three major Western religions have killed one another rather than practice love. We share the same roots in Judaism. We share the same holy places. Western European Christians, too, killed many Muslims in the Crusades. Christians killed each other over heresy in the Inquisitions and in various theocracies. It is tragic how base humans can behave, using ideologies that clearly preach love to kill.

  3. It’s nice to learn something new and different. Makes one wonder why historians have to change things though. If this was truly the case, and I have no reason to doubt otherwise, it should have been stated as such back then. Hope it gets changed. 🙂
